Complaints to the Spanish Data Protection Agency increase by 35%

The Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) has published a 2021 report, which brings together the most relevant activities, reports and procedures of the year. One of the most striking data in this report was the number of complaints, which increased by 35% (14,098) compared to the previous year (10,443). 
 
During the past year, work has continued on the Priority Channel to request the urgent removal of sexual or violent content published on the Internet. Thus, 377 requests were received through this channel, and 25 emergency interventions were carried out, after determining the particularly sensitive nature of the personal data disclosed and the serious impact on the privacy of individuals.
 
In terms of the type of complaints, the most frequent in 2021 related to internet services (16%), video surveillance (12%), receipt of advertising (except spam) (11%) and improper inclusion in delinquency files (9%). In terms of sanctioning procedures, 585 were completed, 49% more than in 2021. The most frequent areas of sanctioning procedures are video surveillance (25%), internet services (22%), and advertising via email or mobile phone (9%).
 
According to the AEPD report, last year the body carried out 25 emergency interventions after determining the particularly sensitive nature of the personal data disclosed and the serious impact on the privacy of individuals, achieving the immediate removal of sensitive content.
